Psychology of Student Success
Department(s)
Description
The goal of this course is to examine the ways in which various psychological, societal, cultural, political, and historical factors impact student’s academic experiences and outcomes in urban higher education settings. Together, we will explore these topics using selected readings, classroom discussions, personal narratives, and various media (e.g. Images, Ted Talks, YouTube). We will be basing our discussions on selected readings from the textbook, reading journal articles, chapters from selected books (which I will provide a copy of), or online news articles. In addition to classroom discussions, we will partake in weekly meetings where you will have the opportunity to discuss the weekly topic in small groups. As a class, we will collectively reflect on strategies, tools, and support structures that students can utilize to addresses challenges or obstacles they may encounter during their time at institutions of higher education, or specifically at City College. Therefore, the collaboration amongst all members of this class will build the framework for the course.
