Modern Arabic Literature

Description

This course introduces students to modern and contemporary issues in Arabic literature and culture, focusing on major trends, themes, and genres. Although topics may vary from semester to semester, the class aims to provide a starting point in the study of Arabic texts through which students will be introduced to short stories, novels, essays, films, and plays that explore social, religious, and historical aspects of modern and contemporary Arab culture. Along with these texts, class will also draw on audio-visual material in order to draw connections between various kinds of media and promote discussion. Taught in Arabic. Prerequisite: Arabic 30100 or permission of the instructor. 3hr./wk.; 3 cr.
