Department(s)

Description

The course consists of a one-hour weekly Jumbo Lecture Seminar containing presentations by distinguished full-time faculty and invited speakers from industry and a two-hour Lab Section that gives students hands-on experience from various engineering disciplines. Three additional hours are then spent with a writing instructor from our graduate writing program in an intensive, writing section that uses the content material provided by the subject seminar in the lab and jumbo lecture seminar. The course is team-taught, with the writing instructor and the discipline-based instructor (Lab instructor) working in tandem. The discipline-based instructor (lab) is hired by the Grove School of Engineering (GSOE); the writing instructor is a student or graduate of our Graduate Writing Program at City, thus integrating the students with one of the programs that distinguishes the college. The course views writing as the key to critical thinking; as a conduit to other topics that will appear in the General Education Requirement: ethics, logic, political thinking, aest
