Course Title
Biomedical Signal Processing and Instrumentation
Department(s)
Description
This course introduces (1) the fundamentals of signal processing, such as linear system theory, analog and digital signals, quantization, random and white noise and filter design (2) the conceptual notions of biosignal generation, transduction and acquisition, and (3) applied biomedical signal processing with several examples, such as in the field of cardiology (ECG data com Pression, QRS and R-R interval detection, arrhythmia classification) and diagnostic ultrasound (tissue backscatter and attenuation measurements), and power spectral methods in diagnosis. To process biosignals, the student will learn basic information about quantitative methods including digital filtering and amplification, time-delay estimation, transfomation to frequency and eigen domains, linear Prediction, and adaptive signal processing. If time permits, leading bioengineering research from the literature will be discussed.
