Nature and humanity have a long history together. This course addresses the consequences of those encounters in modern Europe, focusing on sustainability, water, the idea of nature, agriculture, artistic expression, the built environment, corporations, seeds, and policy. Our time frame will be roughly the turn of the nineteenth century to the present, which allows us to look at how Europeans meet the challenges of a changing natural environment.
