This course offers an introduction to the theory of democracy. It is dividedinto two parts: the first takes a historical approach, focusing on how this political form was designed and determined before the start of the"democratic age" in the nineteenth century. The second takes a more analytical approach, focusing on the debates within democratic theory,which have occurred during the twentieth century. The course aims todeepen understanding of the complexity and contestability of democracy by exposing students to a variety of different perspectives.
