An analysis of the evolution of crime and policing in the United States from the development of the first professional police forces in the 1830s up to the present. The course examines crime and policing as an element of governance and politics and assesses the manner in which crime and policing has interacted, processes of economic transformation, technological change, and with social conflict relating to race and class.
