This course examines the journalist's role in society and the critical choices reporters face daily. The course analyzes the interpretations of freedom of the press as guaranteed by the First Amendment and the role of the press as the Fourth Estate. The course will review some landmark legal cases and explore journalistic practices from a legal and ethical point of view. The course will look at the internal discussions taking place inside the journalism industry and suggestions being offered to maintain public trust.
